About Us
Basically, we are a small community that shares a particular vocation; we have all been in or remain in the US Armed Forces and consider ourselves Christians at the same time (if that sounds like you, we would love to hear from you!). As such, we have felt called to consider amongst ourselves and the general public what exactly it means in our day and age to be a Christian soldier, which is where we came up with the image of a Centurion.
Our primary focus has been on supporting others relationally through conversations that encourage and edify one another. These conversations include equal parts theology, strategy, and compassion. Sometimes those conversations lead people away from the military, other times it doesn’t; we aren’t here to convince people of our beliefs, but to help them develop their own. We feel the best decisions are fully informed, so we try to offer what sometimes might be alternate perspectives on issues pertaining to war, Christian ethics, and justice.
We still have a lot of things we would like to help build, as you can see in our Vision and Mission Statement, but those long journeys begin with a single step. What we are working hard to do is to help the Church build a more consistent and compassionate ethic toward war, peace, and statecraft. To be honest, we would like to see freedom of religious expression be extended to military service – specifically, to build selective conscientious objection into our legal code (we usually call this the doctrine of Just War, that each war be conscientiously considered by people of faith). We also want our fellow warriors to know there is a community of believers that submits equally (or tries) to the authorities AND Jesus’ command of enemy love. For those who determine their consciences are at odds with armed service, we would like to see the military regulations on conscientious objection to be more accessible.
To do all this, we need time and resources. Bear with us as we (slowly) move toward building a more comprehensive web site that will provide access to both military regulations and trends and religious resources, such as podcasts, articles, and videos pertaining to the theology surrounding war, peace, and statecraft. To contribute to our efforts, please visit our How To Give page. Until then, we would like to invite you to interact with us on Facebook and Causes, Google Calendar, Twitter, and right here on our blog! We will try to incorporate a wide range of posts (video, audio, written, links, etc.) for you to deliberate on. Invite your friends, tell your church, and think about this stuff yourself; help us wage peace!
